Say Goodbye to Tornado Warnings, Reliable Radar and Climate Science

The proposed budget disaster bill moving through the Senate includes major funding cuts for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and the National Weather Service (NWS), potentially impacting weather forecasting, climate research and other critical services.

Several former NWS directors have warned that the proposed cuts could lead to unnecessary deaths, and there are concerns about the potential impact on public safety, economic interests and national security.

Consider the vital services that could be gone if this budget gets approved as is:

  • Think about this summer without accurate weather models and forecasts, leading to fewer warnings of tornadoes or derechos

  • Reduced weather balloon launches, failing radar equipment and broken satellites

  • The U.S. will cancel climate research, monitoring and reporting, educational programs and conservation efforts - coming off the second-lowest level of sea ice in 47 years!

  • Plus, the T$ump Admin already directed the NOAA to archive data and stop tracking the costs of extreme weather events.

PBS News highlighted the impact these cuts could have - watch below:

I plan to call both Senators Ernst and Grassley to ask how our farmers and everyday Iowans will feel about the loss of this critical public service?
