Corn, soybean commodity prices are down, and farm bankruptcies are up - just another year living in a state governed by Republicans
Iowa now has the second-worst economy in the nation, according to a June report from the U.S. Commerce Department of Bureau of Economic Analysis, shrinking 6.1% compared to the last quarter of 2024.
This follows a March report from Wallet Hub that ranked Iowa as having the worst economy in the country.
Our Ag sector could experience $1.5 billion in losses and 11,000 jobs lost this year - and this was BEFORE T$ump's disastrous tariff policy forced our trading partners to cancel orders and strike deals with Brazil, Canada, Mexico, among others. Not to mention, canceling SNAP and USAID anti-hunger programs, and our farmers will have NO market for their goods.
All of this MAGA winning has resulted in family-farm bankruptcies increasing 55% compared to the same time in 2023 and are on track to surpass 2024 numbers.
“Unpredictable tariffs, immigration overhauls, federal program cuts and frozen Agriculture Department funding are now part of the discussions farmers are having as they seek financial help.” - Alex Wolf, Bloomberg Law, April 2025
The Iowa GOP has had a trifecta for 9 YEARS STRAIGHT, meaning they've controlled the Governor's office and both chambers of the legislature. Based on these economic indicators + several others (school vouchers, polluted waterways & significant outmigration of our college grads), I think Iowa is due for a major pivot and a new direction in 2026.
