On May 1, more than 300 Iowa attorneys gathered throughout the state for a solemn and symbolic act: publicly reaffirming the Attorney’s Oath they first took upon joining the legal profession. Ceremonies were held in Des Moines and Cedar Rapids.
Law Day, established by President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1958, is celebrated every May 1 to reflect on the importance of the rule of law in a free society. Sponsored by The Iowa State Bar Association (ISBA), this year’s event aimed to serve as a powerful reminder of lawyers' duty to uphold the Constitution, defend justice, and serve the public with integrity.
The Iowa Lawyer’s Oath includes promises to “support the Constitutions of the United States and the State of Iowa,” “maintain the respect due to the courts,” and “faithfully and ethically discharge the duties required of Iowa lawyers.” It also affirms a broader civic mission: to support “the cause of the defenseless or oppressed” and to represent the profession as one of justice, honor, civility, and service.
