Art Cullen reflects on his visit to Democracy Iowa meeting

Pulitzer-winning columnist and noted Iowa commentator, Art Cullen, wrote about his visit to our October meeting in the Storm Lake Times-Pilot.

"When momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy. Those Des Moines women are fired up. About 200 of them started gathering in February as sort of a support group for shunned moderates-to-liberals with money. About 80 showed up for my book reading at Central Presbyterian Church, which is hardly Antifa. They cheered when I said Democratic State Auditor Rob Sand can win the governor’s race. They are not radical. Former Chief Justice Marsha Ternus was there. The National Guard was not needed to protect the church."

As Cullen travels across Iowa promoting his book, he observes a recurring theme: people want the Iowa they once knew, where neighbors greeted each other kindly, schools excelled and rural towns thrived on local businesses and open markets.

Iowa author Art Cullen speaks at Democracy Iowa's monthly meeting Oct. 2025.

He notes how our backwards educational policies, environmental ruin, and the loss of women’s rights have left many Iowans feeling alienated from their own state.

But as more Iowans voice their concerns and organize for change, the possibility of restoring “Iowa Normal” seems increasingly within reach.
