Act Now: Protect Iowa Public Radio

ree

Marsha Ternus encourages members to oppose efforts by the administration to defund the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, which will have a ripple effect on 1500 local public radio and television stations, including Iowa Public Radio.

There are many reasons to support public broadcasting, but focusing on the impact on rural communities may resonate with our Congressional delegation.

Please contact our members of Congress and urge them to support CPB (contact info below).  Use all or part of this language or draft your own:

I write to urge you to support funding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. While the target of this effort appears to be NPR and PBS, it will also affect 1,500 local public radio and television stations that receive the vast majority of these resources, including Iowa Public Radio. About 20% of Americans live in an area where the local public radio station is the only source of local news. Nearly two-thirds of the counties Iowa Public Radio serves are rural areas with limited or no other local options. For these areas that depend on public radio, defunding CPB would be particularly problematic because public radio stations are often the sole source of critical information in emergencies and natural disasters. The Iowa Public Radio network serves as a statewide distribution system for emergency alerts, which all other radio stations can monitor. When the next tornado, derecho or disaster strikes, these services help Iowans escape harm and stay connected to crucial information in the aftermath. As you can see, a loss of funding will have the most negative impact on Iowa's rural communities. How can you be an advocate for Iowans, particularly those Iowans in rural areas, and support defunding the Corporation for Public Broadcasting?  Please vote against defunding CPB!
